Hebrews 4:16 is one of my favorite verses because it reminds me of such a freeing truth: I don’t have to wonder if I’m good enough for God. On my own, I’m not—but Jesus is. When I step back a couple of verses, I’m reminded of who He is and why He’s more than enough.
The author of Hebrews writes:
“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
What a gift! This verse shows us that because of who Jesus is and what He has done, we can approach God confidently—not in fear or shame, but in assurance that we will be met with mercy and grace.
Understanding Hebrews 4:16
To fully grasp this verse, we need to see its bigger context. Earlier in Hebrews 4, the writer describes Jesus as our great High Priest. Unlike the earthly priests who entered the Holy of Holies once a year to offer sacrifices for sin, Jesus entered the true heavenly sanctuary once and for all. By offering His own blood, He secured eternal redemption for us (Hebrews 9:12).
Even more, Jesus is not a distant figure. He is both fully God and fully human. He understands our weaknesses and sympathizes with our struggles (Hebrews 4:15). Because of His sacrifice and His intercession at the right hand of God (Romans 8:34), we’re invited to boldly step into God’s presence. The throne that once symbolized judgment is now a throne of grace.
An Analogy: The King’s Invitation
Picture a powerful king in a magnificent castle. For centuries, only the most important people could enter his throne room, and even they approached with trembling. Standing before the king was intimidating and rare.
Now imagine that the king’s beloved son—the prince—is kind and approachable. He spends time with the people, knows their struggles, and loves them dearly. One day, the prince announces that anyone who wishes to see the king may do so freely. Even better, he promises to personally walk them into the throne room and stand by their side.
That changes everything. The people no longer approach the throne in fear, but with confidence—because of their relationship with the prince.
This is the picture of what Jesus has done for us. The king is God, the prince is Jesus, and we are the people invited into His presence.
Our Access Through Jesus
Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus opened the way for us to come to God. He is our mediator and advocate, ensuring we are welcomed and heard.
We don’t approach God because of our own worthiness—we approach because of Jesus. And that changes everything.
Living in the Light of This Truth
When we understand Hebrews 4:16, it shifts how we live. It invites us to:
- Pray Boldly – Bring your needs, fears, and hopes to God, knowing His throne is one of grace.
- Trust Fully – Rest in Jesus’ intercession and know your confidence is in Him, not yourself.
- Live Freely – Let go of the fear of judgment and walk in the assurance of God’s love.
This isn’t permission to live carelessly—it’s freedom to rest in God’s love while pursuing holiness.
A Personal Word
Hebrews 4:16 is more than a verse—it’s an invitation. Just like the king’s subjects walking into the throne room with the prince at their side, we can draw near to God with confidence. His love and grace are greater than our failures.
This truth is the heart behind Boldly Approaching Grace. My hope is that as you read here, you’ll be reminded of God’s deep love for you and encouraged in your walk with Him. And if you don’t yet know Him personally, I’d love to talk with you more about what that relationship can mean for your life.
